4,000,000 pounds sterling record fine for pollution

Article Abstract:

Environment Agency Wales has brought a successful prosecution against Milford Haven Port Authority, which has admitted breaching the Water Resources Act 1991. Cardiff Crown Court has now imposed a record fine of 4 million pounds sterling on the port authority as a result of an incident on Feb 15, 1996, in which the 'Sea Empress,' which contained crude oil, ran aground at St Ann's Head. Some 72,000 tonnes of light crude oil was released over the seven days during which the ship was grounded.
