Schizophrenia: Signals from the other side

Article Abstract:

Schizophrenia is a complex developmental disorder found to affect many regions of the cerebral cortex and several nuclei deep in the brain. Products of the NRG1 are shown to regulate the type of glutamate receptor that is activated by NMDA in cell cultures and slices prepared from rat prefrontal cortex, but studies using postmortem human tissue show that NRG1 reduces the tyrosine phosphorylation of NMDA receptors (NMDARs), a modification that is triggered by the binding of NMDA or glutamate.

Toxin in bollous impetigo and staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome targets desmoglein 1

Article Abstract:

This article discusses studies conducted on exfoliative toxin A (ETA), which causes bullous impetigo and staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome. The authors found that ETA cleaved to mouse and human desmoglein 1 (Dsg1), and maintain that Dsg1 is a specific receptor for ETA cleavage, causing blisters and allowing bullous impetigo bacteria to spread.

Dangerous signals from E. coli toxin

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns alpha-hemolysin, a cytolytic toxin secreted by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Research suggests this toxin can induce oscillatory calcium signals that, in turn, effect inflammatory response, gene expression and other cellular activities.
