Congress may slice indirect Medicare teaching funds

Article Abstract:

Medical schools are concerned that a Republican-dominated Congress may seek to reduce the Medicare budget by decreasing the amount of subsidies for indirect medical education (IME). IME grants fund educational costs for residents, such as the cost of research and diagnostic tests. Pres Clinton's proposed 1996 budget did not reduce Medicare funding. However, Republicans may be inclined to seek spending cuts to reduce the level of federal subsidies.
