TB spreading faster than doctors' knowledge about care

Article Abstract:

A survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control found that many physicians were unable to correctly diagnose or treat tuberculosis (TB). For example, only 35.5% were able to give examples of Mantoux skin test results that would indicate the need for follow-up. In addition, only 40% of generalists and 70% of specialists were able to describe the recommended treatment for the disease. The physicians surveyed were chosen because they practice in areas with high rates of infection; in fact, 70% of the respondents were currently treating TB cases.

X-rays are called key to discovering child abuse

Article Abstract:

More physicians should order x-rays in cases of suspected child abuse, according to a study presented at the 60th annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Children should be carefully examined for bone fractures and for soft tissue injury, which may be the only evidence of abuse. The American Medical Association has published extensive guidelines on preventing, diagnosing and treating child abuse and neglect. These guidelines, which are summarized, are different from detection techniques used until recently.

Grape growers' wrath

Article Abstract:

A substantial number of physicians invest their time and money in wineries, and as a group they are criticized for profiteering from an unhealthy, antisocial product. Wells Shoemaker, a physician-vintner who writes on alcohol and health, defends the moderate consumption of wine against those who cite fetal alcohol syndrome to gain sympathy for a neo-prohibitionist movement. Groups such as the Society of Medical Friends of Wine also defend the food value of wine.
