Scientists divided on relevance of race in medical research

Article Abstract:

BiDil, which treats heart failure, is the first drug marketed to a specific racial group as it is found to be ineffective in whites. Most scientists agree that the race or a sociodemographic group is an important surrogate for environmental, cultural and even genetic factors underlying disease predisposition and outcomes.

Issues related to efforts to create a blood test to identify variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), the human form of bovine spongiform encephelapothy (BSE), are examined. Topics include US concerns about the BSE crisis in Europe, organizations working on a vCJD test, and difficulties in creating a reliable test.

vCJD epidemic could be first of many, experts warn

Article Abstract:

Variant Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease as considered as a 'mini-epidemic' that could be followed by many other large epidemics to come in future. The victims of these diseases are those who have eaten infected meat and have the shortest incubation times.
