Screening for a solution

Article Abstract:

Despite the introduction of screening methods for cervical cancer, the incidence of the disease in the UK has not fallen and some 2,000 women die each year. The Papanicolou (Pap) method, or smear test, was first introduced as a nationwide screening programme in 1964 and around 4 million Pap smears per year are carried out in Britain. However, the blanket health promotion technique is failing many women, who may be apprehensive about the process, and the current three-year or five-year callout is not reducing deaths from cervical cancer. It is possible that self-check procedures may be as effective as smear tests in the longterm.

Durkheim, social integration and suicide rates

Article Abstract:

Sociologist Emile Durkheim was born in France in 1858 and studied at the Ecole Normale Superior before becoming a teacher at the University of Bordeaux. His particular interest was social order and stability and how they could be maintained by linking individuals into society. Durkheim believed that shared beliefs and values were important for social order. This approach was the basis of his study of suicide, which he demonstrated as a social fact requiring a sociological answer. Durkheim's work on suicide is discussed.
