Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Content to Diagnose Iron Deficiency in Children

Article Abstract:

Reticulocyte Hb content appears to be the best indicator of iron deficiency in children. A reticulocyte is an immature red blood cell. Researchers analyzed a variety of physiological measurements in blood samples from 210 children. The measurements included blood levels of hemoglobin, iron, ferritin and transferrin, transferrin saturation, and circulating transferrin receptor and reticulocyte hemoglobin content. Twenty percent of the children had iron deficiency and about half of these children had iron deficiency anemia. Reticulocyte hemoglobin content proved to be the most accurate indicator of iron deficiency.

Screening healthy infants for iron deficiency using reticulocyte hemoglobin content

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to evaluate reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) for detecting iron deficiency without anemia in healthy 9- to 12-month-old infants and to compare CHr with hemoglobin in screening for iron deficiency in the population. The results indicate that a CHr of less than 27.5 pg is a more accurate hematological indicator of iron deficiency compared with hemoglobin of less than 11 g/dL in these healthy 9- to 12-month-old infants.
