Security of medical records deserves close scrutiny

Article Abstract:

The Medical Records Confidentiality Act addresses patients' concerns over the confidentiality of their medical records by establishing stiffer civil and criminal penalties for health organizations that fail to keep their medical records secure. Whereas the reviewing of electronically-kept records can be tracked, paper medical records are more exposed to improper viewing due to the fact that they are often unsupervised and easily accessible.

Dutch group favors distancing doctors from euthanasia

Article Abstract:

The Royal Dutch Medical Assn has revised its policy on euthanasia to relieve doctors of the emotional distress involved. The association wants patients to perform the procedure, using drugs provided by physicians. The latter are to intervene only if patients are too incapacitated to carry out the act themselves. The new policy is intended neither to promote mercy killing nor to discourage it.
