Selection and persistence of viral resistance in HIV-infected children after exposure to single-dose nevirapine

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to assess the selection of HIV-1-resistant mutations and their duration of detection in HIV-infected infants after exposure to the single-dose nevirapine (sd-NVP) regimen in South Africa. It was found that mothers whose infants had resistant mutations had statistically significantly higher viral loads than those whose infants did not, suggesting that combination of ARV therapy provided to pregnant women with advanced HIV disease might reduce the selection of resistance in fewer HIV-infected infants.

Challenges to conducting HIV preventative vaccine trials with adolescents

Article Abstract:

Adolescents are important targets for research in primary prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. An estimated 10.3 million people between the ages of 15 to 24 years have HIV infection/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) worldwide and it is proved that many of them were infected in their adolescent years.
