Self-referral disappointment: AMA, others say they'll work for legislative fix to new Stark rules

Article Abstract:

Many medical associations, including the American Medical Assn (AMA) and the American Society of Internal Medicine, plan to continue lobbying Congress for modifications to laws governing physician self-referrals. The AMA believes that physician self-referral is unethical, but believes that the rules known as 'Stark I,' which take effect on Sep 13, 1995, are too rigid and burdensome.

Stark seeks stiffer self-referral standards

Article Abstract:

Rep Pete Stark has introduced a bill called the Comprehensive Physician Ownership and Referral Act of 1993 that would forbid physicians from referring patients for tests or procedures to a laboratory or pharmacy that they own or invest in. Critics have charged that such practices lead to overutilization of expensive services and overprescription of drugs.

Medicare proposals offer some relief from CLIA, Stark

Article Abstract:

House Republicans' Medicare reform proposals offer physicians regulatory relief from Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 provisions regarding in-office labs and would ease the Stark I and II laws' self-referral restrictions.
