Sensing heart stress

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the hypertrophic response leading to heart failure in terms of how biomechanical stress translates to biochemical changes in heart muscle cells. Research indicates that the integrin-melusin functions as a biomechanical sensor and protects the heart from adverse effects of pressure load such as pathological overgrowth.

Melusin, a muscle-specific integrin beta(sub)1--interacting protein, is required to prevent cardiac failure in response to chronic pressure overload

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates that theabsence of muscle-specific integrin beta(sub)1--ineracting protein, melusin, although does not affect cardiac development or heart's basal function, it causes a reduced left ventricular hypertrophy that leads to cardiomyopathyand contractile dysfunction upon pressure overload.

Listening for hoof beats in heart beats

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the physiological aspects of cardiac conduction system as they relate to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Data are presented on the role played by the Sp1-related transcription factor HF-1b in the functional aspects of the heart's conductance system.
