HIV-1 seroprevalence, risk factors, and preventive behaviors among women in northern Thailand

Many married women in Thailand are at risk of heterosexual HIV infection. In a survey of 804 married women, 3% tested positive for HIV. Three-quarters of the HIV-positive women had no risk factors and therefore must have been infected by their husbands.

Medication use by female sex workers for treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, Chiang Rai, Thailand

Article Abstract:

The practice of using medications not obtained from an official clinic by female sex workers (FSW) in Thailand may indicate a need for further education of the workers and those providing the drugs. Two-hundred FSWs visiting a sexually transmitted diseases (STD) clinic in Thailand were surveyed as to their use of medicines to prevent and treat STDs. More than half of these women reported using drugs that they did not get from an official government STD clinic for this purpose. The probability of inappropriate treatment may be reduced by educating those participating in this custom.
