Sexual assertiveness training promotes condom use

Article Abstract:

An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that outreach programs for HIV risk groups can successfully promote condom use if they are culture- and gender-sensitive and participants were taught social skills. Two African-American women led the most successful intervention program effort by beginning with a session on ethnic and gender pride and proceeding to sessions on HIV risk behaviors and prevention techniques and on sexual assertiveness and communication training.

Gun ownership tied to higher risk for women's murder, suicide

Article Abstract:

Women who die violent deaths in their homes are killed by guns more often than any other cause, according to a five-year study led by Dr. James Bailey of the University of Tennessee. The trend is true for both murders and suicides, the study found. Common factors preceding violent suicides include women living alone and women with mental illness. For homicides, risk factors are domestic violence and illegal drug use. The study says social intervention can help prevent the deaths.
