Waltzing transporters and 'the dance macabre' between humans and bacteria

Article Abstract:

Recent advances in the field of multidrug-resistance efflux pumps, particularly those belonging to the resistance-nodulation-cell-division (RND) family of transporters, with their unusually high degree of substrate promiscuity, are reviewed. It is concluded that continuing efforts in both academic and applied research may help in the introduction of these important agents into clinical practice.

Waltzing transporters and 'the dance macabre' between humans and bacteria

Article Abstract:

Ex vivo cultures of lung epithelium are used to show that influenza A H5N1 viruses can infect the human lower respiratory tract. The findings that H5N1 virus infects nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal epithelia has implied that the inefficiency of the avian-to-human or human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus might not be explained by the inability of the virus to replicate at these sites.

Influenza, an important disease in humans and animals, is caused by viruses that undergo continuous antigenic change and that possess an animal reservoir. Hence, it is reported that the imposition of new rules for working with infectious influenza viruses under high security and high containment conditions would stifle scientific progress

Article Abstract:

The significant progress made towards understanding the virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and the disease, SARS, is discussed. The progress made towards developing vaccines and therapies is also highlighted.
