Sexual harassment should not be tolerated

Article Abstract:

An informal American Medical Association (AMA) survey found that almost 75% of 2,225 female respondents had been sexually harassed. Most women were harassed during medical school or residency, and 40% were harassed while in practice. Many of the respondents, 977, did not report the incident because of fear of negative impact. Many women felt that they were expected to put up with such abuse if they wanted to be doctors. The AMA is offering a booklet, 'Guidelines for Establishing Sexual Harassment Prevention and Grievance Procedures' to help those working on the problem.

Take a moment for women; study needs your help to shed light on women physicians

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Assn (AMA) Education and Research Foundation plans to survey 10,000 women physicians in order to study factors such as discrimination, stress, work habits, personal health and other issues of concern. A 1983 AMA study found that 2/3 of female doctors had at least one child and that balancing the demands of childbearing, childrearing and professional responsibilities is the greatest challenge for women physicians. It is critical that all questionnaires be returned for the data to be most valuable.
