Shelter from the storm

Article Abstract:

Some Maine doctors and many area consumers are disturbed by the advance of managed care plans and health maintenance organizations into the local medical care market. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine is establishing a managed care joint venture with Maine Medical Center called Maine Partners Health Plan. After public outcry, the two partners agreed to include the Catholic Mercy Hospital in their plan. The Maine insurance bureau will hold hearings on that plan and a similar managed care package developed in central Maine.

HMO can be for-profit - maybe

Article Abstract:

The Maine Bureau of Insurance tentatively approved a for-profit health maintenance organization developed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maine and the Maine Medical Center. The sponsors have been ordered to meet ten conditions which the bureau says will bring Maine Partners Health Plan into compliance with existing rules. One of the conditions stipulates the venture must operate under the 'nonprofit purposes' in the Blue Cross charter. The sponsors have not decided if they will comply or file for a reconsideration.

Can the Hippocratic Oath apply to managed care?

Article Abstract:

It was the consensus of physicians attending a working group addressing the application of the Hippocratic Oath to managed care sponsored by the Integrated Healthcare Assn that managed care plan physicians can behave ethically. Responding to criticism that the cost-cutting focus of managed care plans obviate adherence to the Hippocratic Oath, the physicians said that ethical conduct is the same in managed care plans as it is in fee-for-service plans.
