Short-Course Prophylaxis against Tuberculosis in HIV-Infected Persons

Article Abstract:

Two to six months of drug treatment to prevent tuberculosis in HIV patients could prolong their life and save money. Researchers analyzed the costs and effectiveness of various antituberculosis drugs for various periods of time in a group of hypothetical patients. Twelve months of isoniazid increased 5-year survival rates by 9% and life expectancy by 8.7 months, decreased the incidence of tuberculosis by 27%, and saved 4 medical care dollars for every 1 spent on treatment. However, two to six months of treatment with various combinations of isoniazid, rifampin or pyrazinamide had a similar effect.

Nurse case management to improve glycemic control in diabetic patients in a health maintenance organization: a randomized, controlled trial

Article Abstract:

A diabetes nurse case manager can substantially improve glycemic control in diabetic patients. Diabetic patients must alter their lifestyle or use medication to maintain their blood glucose level within a healthy range. Researchers compared 17 patients with type-1 diabetes and 121 patients with type-2 diabetes who were managed by a nurse specialist in consultation with physicians, or treated by standard means. Glycosylated hemoglobin levels fell 1.7 percentage points in patients treated by the case manager, compared to only 0.6 percentage points for those treated conventionally.
