Shuffling mouse's genetic deck may illuminate causes of complex diseases

Article Abstract:

Eight mouse strains, including a strain predisposed to obesity and a strain with delayed stem cell death, eye abnormalities and hearing loss are used to create 1000 inbred strains that shed light on complex diseases in humans. Churchill, of the Bar Harbor, Maine-based laboratory, used mice because rodent research offers the opportunity to control myriad variables that make studies in human difficult.

Prions found in deer body fluids

Article Abstract:

A new research has shown that blood and saliva of deer with chronic wasting disease carry infectious prions that can easily transmit the disease to other deer. The latest study has established that prion disease can be transmitted through blood and the presence of infectious chronic wasting disease prions in saliva explains the disease's facile transmission.
