Small is beautiful

Article Abstract:

Innovative nurse-led medical care is helping the population of Lewes, East Sussex, UK. The small local community hospital has been allowed to stay open with a minor injuries unit dealing with up to 5,000 patients per year. The Victoria Hospital also runs a small operating unit, which has been equiped with the help of a 1 million pounds sterling refurbishment. Local people prefer to be treated at the community hospital instead of the large hospital which is further way. Hospital management claim the hospital is vitally important for the area which has a large proportion of low-income families.

Fighter pilots

Article Abstract:

The UK nursing profession had to fight for the privilege to submit bids to run community health pilot schemes under the National Health Service (Primary Care) Act, yet only eight of the 200 bids submitted were nurse-led. Successful bids will be announced on Dec 20 1997. One of the bids for a nurse-led scheme concerns a single-handed practice for which the health trust had been unable to find a replacement general practitioner (GP). A nurse has applied to run the practice with the help of a part-time GP, and under the medical directorship of a nearby full-time GP.
