Nurturing a jewel of the Caribbean

Article Abstract:

British researchers are taking part in an international, multicultural project aimed at developing sustainable forest use programmes in Guyana. Guyana's forests cover some 80% of its land and are seen as an important resource for economic development. The Iwokrama Rainforest Programme protects 360,000 ha of tropical forest and aims to combine forest utilisation and sustainable development. Among the activities to emerge from the project is the Makushi Women's Research Group, comprising researchers from Guyana and elsewhere in the Commonwealth, including the UK, who are collecting information on the forest's indigenous people, plants and animals.

High value yen depresses manufacturers
