Article Abstract:

Questions concerning therapy for five diabetic patients reveals how findings of the UK Prospective Diabetes Study relate to issues in case management. The study revealed that control of both blood glucose and blood pressure in diabetes reduces the risk of complications. A patient who has been using chlorpropamide could, therefore, try another drug therapy, as research has indicated that chlorpropamide may increase blood pressure. Another patient who discovered, during a routine check, that her blood pressure was high and she had some eye damage, must control her newly-discovered diabetes.

Balancing family and career: advice from the trenches

Article Abstract:

A woman physician in academic medicine gives tips on how women doctors can balance family and career. She recommends that women doctors marry a spouse who has an egalitarian philosophy toward housework and rearing children, have reliable and competent support people, have a back-up plan when arrangements fall through, make family a priority, take care of themselves, maintain a sense of humor, rise early, set personal and professional goals, and know their limitations. She has also found it helpful to live in an area where home, work, schools, and services are within close proximity.

Family under stress

Article Abstract:

Many health care professionals in the UK still do not pay sufficient attention to the difficulties which families of women with breast cancer may be facing. There is little written information for partners and close family about how they may be affected by a diagnosis of breast cancer. There are many factors which interact to determine how a family will cope with a diagnosis of breast cancer, and it is important to take all of these into account.
