Someone to watch over me

Article Abstract:

Cicely Saunders trained as a nurse, a medical social worker, and then, in order to pursue her interest in the care of the terminally ill, she trained as a doctor. Saunders wrote six articles for a medical journal about euthanasia, pain control, the importance of listening and the role of the nurse when caring for dying patients. The articles created a lot of interest and Saunders began to get support for her plan to open the first hospice. It opened in 1967, and hospices are now found all over the world. Cicely Saunders was awarded the the Order of the British Empire in 1965.

The agony and the ecstasy

Article Abstract:

The many different experiences, both positive and negative, of a student nurse are described. Student nurses are exposed to many distressing situations, and they can find it hard to discuss these with others, even their close relatives. It is particularly difficult to cope with seeing patients in great distress, and there is deep sadness when patients die. However, the few moments of real communication with patients can make the job seem worthwhile.

Someone to turn to

Article Abstract:

Nursing education can be enhanced by 'mentor' support for students. the student-mentor relationship supplements the relationship between student and tutor. Course length mentorships have proved most satisfactory as trust can develop within the relationship. The mentor offers support in dealing with outside pressures on students. However, combining the roles of mentor and assessor proved unsuccessful due to problems of role differentiation.
