Sleep of ages

Article Abstract:

Records reveal that ivy, hemlock and poppy were used as anaesthetics in 800 AD, although it is believed that drugs were given to relieve pain in Babylon from 2500 BC. In the United Kingdom early surgical operations were usually performed on wounded soldiers, often by untrained men. Church laws excluded women from performing surgery but they helped in operations and in developing the mixtures of herbs used as soporifics.
