Speaking out

Article Abstract:

The combined role of chief nursing officer at the UK Department of Health and NHS director of nursing (CNO), to which Sarah Mullally has been appointed, could have a great effect on the future of nursing. Working for a government whose attitude towards nurses is the best ever, the CNO could lead nurses in an obvious and visionary way. She will, however, at the same time have to advise the government and do what politicians desire, and will not be able to express her views in public.
