Special Olympics, special smiles: assessing the feasibility of epidemiologic data collection

Article Abstract:

Oral health information can be collected during dental screening at Special Olympics events. Special Olympics is an athletic program for mentally retarded people. Researchers collected data during the Special Olympics, Special Smiles dental care outreach program at the 1996 New Jersey Summer Games. Participating athletes received brief oral examinations and instructions in tooth-brushing and flossing. Although 70% of athletes had seen their dentist in the past year, 44% needed dental treatment. Data from these events may indicate the dental health of mentally retarded people.

Assessing the cariogenic potential of some infant formulas, milk and sugar solutions

Article Abstract:

Dentists should advise parents that infant formulas vary widely in their potential to cause cavities. A comparison was made of eleven infant formulas, plus a 5% sucrose solution and one of 2% milk. Sucrose caused the highest level of tooth decay. Milk and lactose, which is in milk and several formulas, did very little to promote decay. Formulas which were "low iron" promoted the highest level of decay. Parents should know which brands are safest and infants should not sleep with a bottle that promotes decay.

Assessing the clinical effectiveness of an aerosol reduction device for the air polisher

Article Abstract:

A device that fits on the machine used to polish teeth can reduce the amount of aerosol generated during the procedure. During polishing, small particles of water and polish are released into the air. If the aerosol contains bacteria from the patient's mouth, this could create a health risk for both patient and dental technician. Researchers tested the Jet Shield from Dentsply Preventive Care and found that it reduced the number of bacteria emitted during the procedure.
