States debate 'carrying concealed weapons' laws

Article Abstract:

Oklahoma is among 18 states that are considering or have voted on concealed weapons (CCW) statutes in 1995 to date. Following the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma surprisingly passed a provision that would give adults more protection to carry concealed weapons. Besides Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Utah and Virginia passed similar statutes. California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas and New Mexico rejected concealed weapon proposals, and several other states have not yet decided. Supporters of CCW laws claim they will help reduce crime rates, while critics say the laws will promote homicide. Community-based crime prevention groups, law enforcement, court officials and business people should work to devise crime prevention strategies.

Going online in rural health

Article Abstract:

Federal funding to increase access to the Internet and other telecommunications capabilities by rural health care providers may be at risk. The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allocated $400 million to fund the program, to be collected from long-distance telephone carriers. Lack of awareness by health care providers has limited the number who have applied for the funds. The National Rural Health Association is sponsoring a workshop to explain the provisions and benefits of the program.
