Steer clear of truck blind spots: several programs help motorists safely share the road with trucks and buses

Article Abstract:

More than 250,000 crashes involving at least one passenger car and one large truck happen each year. About 5,000 people die from such accidents. Car drivers have to understand the physical limitations of trucks. Federal, state and private organizations have developed several educational campaigns and programs to allow car drivers to share the road safely with trucks and buses. The programs include the Federal Highway Administration's 'No-Zone,' the Michigan Truck Safety Commission's 'Let's Share the Road, Michigan' and the National Truck Council's 'Safe Motorists and Responsible Trucking.'

Better ergonomics: videotape your task

Article Abstract:

The use of video as a method to study the ergonomic risks of a job is increasingly becoming popular among firms. This practice has been used by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the creation of ergonomic standards. Nevertheless, many firms do not use video to its full extent, preferring to use it only when serious problems occur. This practice should be corrected. Video analysis should, however, not replace in-person observation since not everything can be captured by the camera.

Dollars and sense: make your ergonomics budget go a long way

Article Abstract:

Implementing an ergonomics program does not necessarily mean capital expenditures, as numerous inexpensive solutions abound in installing company safety and health programs. The key to keeping expenditures down is innovating with materials at hand and tapping employees to make suggestions. Considerations in implementing safety programs include prioritizing improvements, facility design and construction and employee education.
