Preventable damage: leptospirosis is a rare but serious illness

Article Abstract:

Leptospirosis is an acute generalised bacterial infectious disease spread primarily by rodents. The condition causes flu-like symptoms, which can lead to a delay in diagnosis. Infections are increasing amongst those who take part in inland water sports as the bacteria multiply in the kidneys of water rats and are excreted into the surface water. To avoid morbidity and mortality from Weil's diseases, there should be effective rat control, banning of swimming on contaminated waters and disinfecting of contaminated work areas.
