No 'deal' on Medicare, just honorable advocacy

Article Abstract:

Congress asked the American Medical Association (AMA) for input in its quest to reform Medicare, and the AMA responded with suggestions that were put to use in Congress' proposal. The surprise for AMA members was Congress' proposal to cut fees for specific physician services, and after complaining to legislators, this part of the proposal was changed. The AMA supports the proposed Medicare reform so far, but physicians warn legislators that they will be unable to treat Medicare patients unless fees to physicians are fair.

Budget-cutting ax slashes public health

Article Abstract:

Congress has proposed spending reductions for many discretionary health care programs. The budget proposals for 1996 include reductions in spending for rural, maternal, and child health care and research. Some block grants may be cut by 50%, which will hinder states' ability to achieve public health goals. The House also has called for the elimination of some injury-control research, funding cuts for the National Institutes of Health and the National Health Services Corp, and eliminating other health programs entirely.

Proposed immigrant care cuts threaten everyone

Article Abstract:

Draft legislation in Congress propose to reduce health services for immigrants. Bills S. 1664 and H.R. 2022 would impose more restrictions on public health services for both legal and illegal immigrants. For example, the Senate bill would allow legal immigrants to be deported for receiving Medicaid for over 12 months during the first five years of their residence. Such restrictions in health care for immigrants will increase health costs and increase the risk for wide distribution of contagious diseases.
