Stricter medical waste rules considered

Article Abstract:

The US Senate is considering bills introduced by Sen Max Baucus and Sen David Durenberger that would establish requirements for the handling, disposal and transportation of medical wastes. Both bills would exempt small medical waste generators, although it is unclear whether they would be exempt from all regulations or just some. Opponents are concerned that the bills could result in new waste-removal standards for physicians' offices. Proponents argue that the bills are needed to protect public health.

Bill would let Medicare cover colorectal cancer screening

Article Abstract:

Rep Benjamin L. Cardin introduced a bill that allows Medicare payment for annual screening to detect colorectal cancer. Most comprehensive health insurance programs already include this benefit. The American Cancer Society forecasts that approximately 138,200 new cases of this cancer will be reported in 1995, and about 55,300 of these patients will die. Preventive medical benefits already in Medicare include Pap smears, mammography, and immunization against influenza and pneumococcal infections.
