Some psychiatrists are taking therapy on the road

Article Abstract:

Psychiatrists noticing a shift in demographic trends are increasingly making more house calls to reach patients. With the rise of homelessness, home health care, de-institutionalization and a growing number of elderly and children at risk of hospitalization, a home-based approach to psychiatric treatment is needed. Part of the reason for a home-based approach is to lessen the cost of psychiatric hospitalization which accounts for $23.1 billion or 71% of the total spent on psychiatric care in the United States.

Doctors told to take charge of patient outcomes data

Article Abstract:

Physicians need to influence the development of patient outcomes data so that accurate and fair information is used to evaluate physicians and medical facilities. A 1992 annual report on hospital mortality rates of Medicare patients released by the Health Care Financing Administration caused a protest among physicians who claim the data was not valid or useful. Many government and private organizations are developing patient outcomes data to rank hospitals and to tie reimbursement to practice guidelines.

Some still want out, but House seeks data bank changes

Article Abstract:

The American Medical Association's (AMA) House of Delegates has accepted a plan that will alter the National Practitioner Data Bank's reporting abilities. Under the approved plan, the AMA will lobby for increased physician confidentiality and will ask Congress to exempt the disclosure of liability payments of less than $30,000. The data bank was created with the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 and faces increasing opposition from physicians.
