Striking the right note

Article Abstract:

UK nurses feel confident that they will receive a good pay rise in the Feb 1999 salary awards. They base their optimism on media and political support. A disappointing award could cause the nurses to become militant. Threatened industrial action has been averted in the past, but the national focus on pay is intense on this occasion. However, nurses may find it difficult to take strike action, particularly after a recent ruling by the Appeal Court which rejected the legitimacy of a hospital workers' trade dispute.

Where practice is far from perfect

Article Abstract:

A survey of 100 delegates at the June 1999 Royal College of Nurses practice nurses conference indicated that 22% had received a pay increase of under 4.7% and that 29% had not yet received an increase. The College's assistant general secretary wants the chairmen of the 200 primary care groups in England to encourage family doctors to pay nurses the 4.7% rise as recommended by the Pay Review Body. Some general practices are short of funds and cannot afford the rise.

The backlash: a potential 2 pounds sterling-a-week pay rise compounded by the imposition of local pay may lead nurses to take industrial action

Article Abstract:

There have been protests over the pay award for nurses recommended by the Pay Review Body, which amounts to just 2 pounds sterling a week, particularly as a 2.5% increase has ben guaranteed to consultants with no local pay element. Nursing unions are now considering their response to the recommendations. The RCN has demanded a 3% rise across the board and called for a debate on Rule 12, the no-strike clause.
