Students' absence registered

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that nursing students with lower levels of attendance in class achieve worse assessment results. Nurse educators should study class attendance to gain insight into responses to different teaching methods, as perceived lack of relevance may influence student attitudes on attendance. UK student nurses now study at institutes of higher education rather than at specialized schools of nursing. A perception of themselves as autonomous students rather than as nurses may have led to changing attitudes to attendance. Monitoring of student absence is also less rigorous.

Wishful thinking

Article Abstract:

Nursing students and student advisers in the UK feel that there are a number of steps which could be taken to reduce the high drop-out rate among student nurses. Some point to problems with accommodation and travelling costs, and believe that the bursary should be increased. Others feel that low morale on the wards is deterring students from taking up nursing as a permanent profession, while some point to the difficulties created by having to work shifts.

Why won't you stay?

Article Abstract:

There are many reasons for the high drop-out rate among student nurses in the UK. Many of those who decided to leave their course are unhappy about the academic aspects, while others cannot cope with uncertainties about their role and status. Others may leave because they feel that they made the wrong career choice, because they become homesick or because they suffer emotional difficulties.
