Surviving the world of consolidations and mergers

Article Abstract:

A flurry of consolidations have occurred within the health care industry in the 1990s. Defining the nature and scope of these consolidations is mandatory for companies hoping to assess their industry standing. Consolidations include any health care provider groups who link to one another, whether loosely in limited alliances or via full-scale mergers. Consolidations result in some integration of health care services. Companies need to be clear about their goals and cognizant of their potential partners before engaging in any consolidations.

Physicians were used to being in charge in the hierarchical health care profession. Cooperation, collaboration and connection will be needed among all health care professionals. Patient care decisionmaking will require the physician to act as negotiator among all medical parties.

Negotiating a good outcome to a group practice sale

Article Abstract:

Physicians in group practice should take the time for a careful assessment before agreeing to be acquired by a larger organization. Members of the group should meet to study their practice methods and define their aims. Also, an examination of the acquiring organization should determine whether the group's goals will be furthered. In addition, the financial arrangements must meet the needs of each physician.
