Swansong for free degrees: what are the implications of the Dearing report for nursing students?

Article Abstract:

The government is to abolish grants and will impose an annual tuition fee of about 1,000, following recommendations from the Dearing report on the future of higher education. The Council of Deans and Head of UK University Faculties for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, believe that there should be a cautious welcome of the report by nursing, but it does have concerns about funding. Prospective students are already put off by long hours and low pay, and the prospect of having to repay loans once income reaches a certain level, will deter them even more.

Practice makes perfect

Article Abstract:

The number of nurses taking on a professional or practice development role continues to rise, but there is no definite information about how many nurses are working in this way or about exactly what they do. The Professional and Practice Development Nurses' Forum, which has received funding from the Foundation of Nursing Studies, now hopes to clarify this situation. At present, not even the terms professional and practice development are clearly defined, and job functions vary greatly between trusts.

Modest blaze

Article Abstract:

The UK's nurses must consider ways of boosting the profile of their profession, ensuring that ordinary people are more aware of the work they undertake. In particular, nurses must fight against those who seem to believe that they should not be highly educated or innovative. The public must be made aware that nurses are very capable of taking on innovative roles. Indeed, evidence suggests that nurses who do take on innovative roles are as effective as doctors.
