Syncope after immunization

Article Abstract:

Fainting may occur after vaccination. Data analysis of the national Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System over a five-year period revealed 700 cases of fainting. Six patients experienced skull fractures or bleeding or bruising of the brain, three of which required surgery. Nearly 45% displayed seizure-like movements, which could lead to unnecessary diagnostic tests. Ninety percent of fainting episodes occurred within 15 minutes of vaccination. Clinicians giving vaccinations should ask patients who display symptoms of impending fainting to sit or lie down and should have patients sit in a waiting area for 15 minutes after vaccination.

Oral fluid therapy: a promising treatment for vasodepressor syncope

Article Abstract:

Increased fluid intake may prevent fainting associated with vasodepressor syncope. Fainting or lightheadedness after standing up is common among teenagers, and the tests required to rule out serious causes can be extensive. Researchers tested intravenous fluid therapy during tilt-table testing of 58 patients, aged 9 to 28 years, with a history of fainting. When elevated to a near-upright position after resting on a tilt table, 49 patients had fainting symptoms. After fluid infusion, 90% of patients had no symptoms. Such patients may simply need to drink more fluids.

Neonatal Deaths After Hepatitis B Vaccine: The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, 1991-1998

Article Abstract:

Hepatitis B vaccine does not appear to increase the risk of death among babies who receive it. Of 1,771 babies vaccinated against hepatitis B who were reported to the national Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) 18 died. Autopsies revealed that 12 died of sudden death syndrome, 3 died from infection, 1 died of cerebral hemorrhage, 1 died of accidental suffocation, and 1 died of congenital heart disease. It is not clear whether all 12 cases of sudden infant death syndrome were caused by the vaccine.
