Systematic search offers a sound evidence base

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly important for nursing practice to be based on research which proves without any doubt its effectiveness. Research is also necessary to show that nursing practice and interventions are cost-effective and standards of nursing care. Against this background, literature reviews can serve as a method of using information to improve nursing practice. They can assist in clarifying terms, and can play a role in delineating and refining variables when looking at specific problems.

The incidence of malnutrition in hospitalised patients

Article Abstract:

There is evidence to suggest that malnutrition in hospitals is still prevalent, although the problem remains largely unrecognised. Doctors and nurses lack knowledge about nutrition, and appropriate training is required as a key to implementing necessary changes. Some patients may be malnourished on admission to hospital and many have inhibited food intake to to anatomical obstruction or neurological damage.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy: a review

Article Abstract:

Enteral feeding may be required for some patients who are are unable to eat adequately. A nasogastric tube is the most common means of enteral feeding but can only be used in the short term. A gastrostomy is usually indicated for long-term feeding. Percutaneous gastrostomy can now be undertaken under endoscopic control, a more simplified procedure than the traditional open surgery under general anaesthesia.
