Systemic sclerosis immunoglobulin G autoantibodies bind the human cytomegalovirus late protein UL94 and induce apoptosis in human endothelial cells

Article Abstract:

Research identifies a peptide from the autoimmune disease systemic sclerosis patient sera, which shared homology with the human cytomegalovirus late protein sequence. Results further show that cytomegalovirus antibodies mediate systemic sclerosis leading to apoptosis of endothelial cells, which suggests a link between cytomegalovirus infection and autoimmunity.

Mitochondrial control of cell death

Article Abstract:

A discussion of the steps that result in mitochondrial membrane permeabilization is presented. Mitochondrial membrane permeabilization is one of the crucial steps in apoptosis, and for this reason, therapeutic strategies could be developed to prevent or enhance this process.

Degranulation plays an essential part in regulating cell surface expression of Fas ligand in T cells and natural killer cells Bossi, G. Griffiths, G.M

Article Abstract:

The authors discuss research which shows that the molecule known as Fas ligand works in a different way than previously believed. This ligand triggers cell death in T cell functions of immune regulation.
