Systems of care

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of care-planning modules used in many nursing information systems (NISs), has revealed that while nurses and software developers differ in their interpretation of the assessment process, computerised care-planning modules can be of benefit. Although poor care planning can result from the failure of the care-planning modules to allow a complete assessment, the shortcomings of such modules can be overcome. Care-planning modules can provide such benefits as savings in nursing time and improved quality of documented care while allowing outcomes to be assessed more accurately.

Layers of meaning

Article Abstract:

A feasibility study on the use of an electronic data assessment system for helping nurses assess continence problems is presented. The system is designed around a structured nursing language which can be input via a series of free-text and menu-driven screens. The system's potential value lies in the user's understanding of precise clinical terms. It must be more efficient and accurate than a manual system in order for it to function effectively as a decision support tool.

Trusting to technology

Article Abstract:

The Excelcare nursing information computer system has been installed at the Lister Hospital in Hertfordshire to help nurses plan, assess and record patient care. The computer network was first installed in eight wards where it was able to help nursing staff give continuity of care. Clinical nurse specialists were able to outline essential requirements for care planning which were entered on the Excelcare system. The system became fully operational in January 1991.
