TEACHING AWARDS AND DEPARTMENTAL LONGEVITY: IS AWARD-WINNING TEACHING THE "KISS OF DEATH" IN AN ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT OF MEDICINE?

Article Abstract:

Studies indicate that formal recognition has a negative impact on medical faculty tenure and advancement. Teachers that are singled out for awards tend to leave the institutions that have awarded them. Possible reasons include the failure of institutions to meet the expectations of the teachers, or that in achieving recognition, the teachers attracted the attention of other institutions and were subsequently recruited by them.

TIBETAN MEDICINE

Article Abstract:

The humanistic element of traditional Tibetan medicine may have implications for modern medical care practices. It targets the causes of ailments rather than focusing on the treatment of symptoms, and incorporates changes in attitude, diet and lifestyle. By emphasizing prevention and maintenance, Tibetan medicine can help alleviate the need for expensive curative procedures such as pharmaceuticals and surgery.
