Taking effect

Article Abstract:

UK nurses are under increasing pressure to prove the cost-effectiveness of their services, but they find it difficult to relate patient outcomes to nursing care as a distinct input. However, some current research projects are proving helpful. One research project, conducted on a nurse-led ward at King's College Hospital, indicates that post-acute patients receiving expert nursing therapy required shorter hospital stays, had fewer complications and had lower physical dependence. Another study on the effectiveness of Macmillan nurses is also producing encouraging results.

So you want to be a ... chiropodist

Article Abstract:

A good general medical background and a sensitive approach to dealing with patients is essential for nurses who wish to train as chiropodists. The UK profession is adopting the working title of podiatrists which is more widely accepted throughout the world. Preventing deformity of the feet is an important medical service, which is taken advantage of by up to 14 million people in the UK every year. Calluses and corns are the main causes of foot problems, although a podiatrist will be able to determine underlying causes of such problems.

What happens when life imitates art?

Article Abstract:

The emotional burden of nursing is thought to play a larger role in extra-marital affairs at the workplace, than the demands of shift-work, according to Denise Knowles of Relate. Individuals who share a traumatic experience often feel attracted to each other, as they feel they can share their experiences, while their partner may often not understand. A recent survey revealed that 33% of working people are 'tempted to have an affair', compared to 25% of non-workers.
