TechScapes assistive technology act: Statewide grant programs: benefit for families

Article Abstract:

The Assistive Technology Act of 1998 provides funding to each state and six territories to operate statewide assistive technology (AT) programs; these programs provide AT related training and technical assistance to persons with disabilities, providers and families. Technology has improved the lives of many children with disabilities and their families and thousands of families know these AT programs are often the best and most informed link between technology needs and appropriate solutions.

Just for kicks camps and programs are designed specifically to create successful experiences, which build positive attitudes for the participants, the program teaches specific skills at a pace in which the individuals can learn, providing the many repetitions and practice time they need. They also utilize equipment that provides feedback and is stimulating enough to keep children with disabilities engaged and working on a specific task.

Parents are discovering that assistive technology devices can be very useful in ensuring that their children begin to develop the skills needed to reach their potential. An assistive technology device is any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of a child with a disability.
