Technology vendors: how to get what you really want

Article Abstract:

Nurse executives can cultivate relationships with technology vendors to better fulfill their institution's requirements. Suggested steps include participating in beta testing programs, customer councils and industry groups; and enhancing communication by providing feedback and sharing information about future plans and directions. Exerting influence on the vendor's policies and plans should be regarded as a right.

Protecting nursing's interests: negotiating with vendors

Article Abstract:

Nurse administrators deciding on information systems will probably need to negotiate with vendors and department directors. Successful negotiations depend on administrators separating negotiable issues from non-negotiable ones, having clear priorities, negotiating maintenance and support as well as price, and building a long-term relationship with vendors. The best negotiations are based on staff needs.

System selection

Article Abstract:

Nurse executives must keep abreast of their hospital's information system and how it can best help staff nurses. Many nurses have little background in technology, but this will not be necessary. A network of experts can assist the head nurse in planning for new technology. The nurse should be familiar with her hospital's system and understand how it will impact the staff.
