The Disease Burden Associated With Overweight and Obesity

Article Abstract:

More than half of all Americans are overweight or obese and have an increased risk of other health problems as a result. Of 16,884 adults participating in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) conducted from 1988 to 1994, 63% of the men and 55% of the women were overweight or obese. These men and women had an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure, or osteoarthritis, and the risk was greater in those who were heavier.

Effect of a 6-month calorie restriction on biomarkers of longevity, metabolic adaptation, and oxidative stress in overweight individuals

Article Abstract:

The effects of 6 months of calorie restriction, with or without exercise, in overweight, nonobese men and women are examined. Results reveal that 2 biomarkers of longevity (fasting insulin level and body temperature) are decreased by prolonged calorie restriction in humans and support the theory that metabolic rate is reduced beyond the level expected from reduced metabolic mass.
