The National Intitutes of Health and clinical research: a progress report

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the problems facing clinical research. The authors maintain that the pool of graduating medical students interested in clinical research is declining due to many factors, including the extremely long training and financial burdens, and the National Institutes of Health has increased the amount of grant programs for clinical research to stimulate interest.

German cutbacks hurt science

Article Abstract:

The state of science in the former East Germany may suffer when the government slashes next year's federal budget by DM30 billion. The proposed five percent cut in the science budget would eliminate last year's six percent increase.

Millenium money for Japanese scientists

Article Abstract:

The Japanese government has pledged [yen]98.5 billion for science in the year 2000. The money will fund new institutes, biotechnology companies, tenured faculty positions, grants-in-aid, and embryo research.
