Fetal fibronectin and bacterial vaginosis in smokers and nonsmokers

Article Abstract:

Researchers have been unable to confirm a previous report that fetal fibronectin only predicts the presence of bacterial vaginosis in smokers. Bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection of the vagina.

The Preterm Prediction Study: sequential cervical length and fetal fibronectin testing for the prediction of spontaneous preterm birth

Article Abstract:

A short cervix and the presence of fetal fibronectin in cervical fluids are independent risk factors for premature birth. This is true regardless of which occurs first.

The preterm prediction study: patterns of cervicovaginal fetal fibronectin as predictors of spontaneous preterm delivery

Article Abstract:

Pregnant mothers with multiple positive fibronectin test results seem to be at increased risk for premature delivery. The production of fibronectin, a normal connective tissue protein, begins in the uterus. Fibronectin tests were performed vaginally on 1,870 women at 24, 26, 28, and 30 weeks of pregnancy. Women with two positive results had a 16% chance of delivering before 30 weeks while women with two negative results had only a 0.3% risk of delivering prematurely. Women with one positive result were at greater risk of having another positive result. Overall, 89% of the women had negative test results at all time points.
