Is There a Role for Androgenic Anabolic Steroids in Medical Practice?

Article Abstract:

More research is needed to determine whether anabolic steroids can be used to prevent wasting syndromes in some patients. HIV patients in particular are at risk of losing body mass. Two 1999 studies showed that anabolic steroids can prevent this wasting in HIV patients and patients with chronic kidney failure. However, long-term steroid use has serious side effects, especially in women. It is also not clear if preventing wasting improves the patient's prognosis.
