The Southampton examination schedule for the diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb

Article Abstract:

A technique for diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limb and neck is described. These disorders are very common but are often hard to diagnose. The examination protocol can be used by a nurse, but further research is needed to determine whether it can be done in community health clinics.

Occupational activity and the risk of hip osteoarthritis

Article Abstract:

Several factors contribute to the likelihood of developing hip osteoarthritis. Overweight contributes, although it is not as important a factor as it is in knee osteoarthritis. Congenital dislocation, Perthes disease, and slipped femoral epiphysis predispose to developing hip osteoarthritis. Inheritable factors, as indicated by the presence of Heberden's nodes, play a role. In addition, mechanical stress appears to contribute. Farming in particular has been shown to be an occupational hazard for hip osteoarthritis, although why this should be so is not clear.

Work related upper limb disorders: getting down to specifics

Article Abstract:

Rheumatologists, orthopedists, physical therapists, and other medical specialists met in Birmingham, UK, in February of 1997 to develop classification criteria for upper-limb disorders. Many shoulder, arm, and hand pain syndromes are work-related, and few clear criteria exist for classifying and differentiating the conditions. The Birmingham criteria have not been clinically tested, but they will improve the diagnosis of upper-limb disorders, many which present no clear physical findings.
