The Tobacco Industry and Underage Youth Smoking

Article Abstract:

Tobacco companies depend heavily on youths beginning to smoke. This situation is revealed in many internal documents, in which increases in smoking among 14-to-17 year olds were seen over and over again to be "encouraging, whether the brand was Salem or Camels. The company studies show that only 5% of smokers begin after age 21, and only 18% begin at age 18. The rest start smoking in earlier teen years. Brand loyalty among 18 year olds is strong and they tend to resist any tendency to switch later. Underage smokers are the key to the tobacco companies' future.
