The acute respiratory distress syndrome

Article Abstract:

Researchers continue to find ways to lower mortality rates from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ARDS is a serious lung disease that can be caused by infection, severe trauma, pneumonia, inhalational injury, drugs, and aspiration of food. About half the people who develop ARDS will die from it. Many patients are placed on a ventilator, and are given greater volumes of air than normal. This was believed to be beneficial but can actually injure the lung even more. A study published in 2000 showed that providing smaller volumes of air during ventilation can reduce the mortality rate 22%.

Acute pulmonary edema

Article Abstract:

A case study of a 62-year old man with bilateral pulmonary infiltrates consistent with pulmonary edema and borderline enlargement of the cardiac silhouette with reference to evaluation and therapy used is presented. Noncardiogenic pulmonary edema is caused by an increase in the vascular permeability of the lung, resulting in an increased flux of fluid and protein into the lung interstitium and air spaces.
